The History of Spider-Man 4:
While there was a lot of buzz about a Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire reprising his role, it never actually got officially greenlit and subsequently wasn't cancelled. Here's the backstory:
Planned, But Not Confirmed: In 2008, after the success of Spider-Man 3, Sony Pictures did have plans for a fourth movie with Sam Raimi directing and Maguire returning. There were even talks of a whole new trilogy.
Development Issues: Unfortunately, creative differences and story ideas reportedly stalled the project.
The Amazing Spider-Man Reboot: With things on hold for Maguire's Spider-Man, Sony decided to reboot the franchise entirely, launching The Amazing Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield in 2012.
So, while a Maguire Spider-Man 4 wasn't cancelled per se, it did get shelved in favor of a new direction.
However, with the multiverse being a big part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe now, there have been talks and fan theories about a Maguire return. In 2022, director Sam Raimi even expressed openness to revisit the idea! So, who knows, maybe we'l
l see Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire yet!
